Five for Friday 2/21

So it's been a couple of weeks since I've written a Five For Friday. Here are JUST five of the many AMAZING things I've seen the past two weeks.

5. Lay it on the Line - Really unique hands on activity in Ms Niemiec's room. Students were learning about the geometric concept "axis of symmetry." Ms Niemiec had a cool rotation going where students made an object then switched places and had match the symmetry of a partners object. Excellent way to drive home the concept.

4. Battle Ready - Battle of the Books officially is in full force after some great kickoff assemblies led by Mrs Keizer and Mrs Muka three weeks ago. Students have been meeting with their teachers and Mrs Knight to check out books! Mrs. Shipley's students collected our first tally of books read today and we are well on our way to smashing some previous year totals. Bonus when we get to 500 books I'll belly flop into a kiddie pool full of pudding, and if we get to 1,000 books read I'll "survive" overnight in the Nature Preserve.

3. MINDing What Matters--TK Odyssey of the Mind teams did an amazing job at Regional Championships!  Page had students on two of the teams that competed. The Lambitz/Jansma team finished 2nd and will move on to the State Championships. The Long/Vaughn team did a great job as well, and one team member, Lyvia Hilton, won an individual award for her leadership and poise in a pressure situation. We are proud of all these students!

2. TATU--Teens against Tobacco Use. This great program ran Wednesday and Thursday at Page. High School students came down and met with out 4th grade classes to teach them the negative impact of tobacco and vaping. Excellent leadership opportunity for our high school students, and great for our kids at Page to hear from high school students they admire.

1. Full Circle - Our 5th grade "Circle of Giving" project ended two weeks ago. Culminating in a final assembly where each classroom gave the charity of their choice the money they raised for that charity. While the amazing academics here at Page are impressive, far more important is learning to use your time and talent to make the world a better place! Grateful for the extra effort on the part of our 5th grade teachers having this program run in their classes several Monday mornings in January and early February.
