In place of Five For Friday: A Reflections at the One Year Mark of the Pandemic. Last year, on this day, I was standing in the hall after students left talking to Dayne Fletke about his new house. Teresa Michalski came out and asked if I had seen the email stating that field trips were on hold until further notice. I had not, but within 4 hours I was watching the Governor's press conference informing us that schools were closed for in-person learning. A lot has happened since that evening. In looking back this Friday, I can't let the day pass without mentioning a few things. Kids are Resilient- It's impressive to see students every day in-person at Page. Our students have weathered this storm amazingly well. While there are standard ups and downs, I cannot believe how great our students are doing. Their progress is incredible in light of everything that has happened. This Community is Great- From Distance Learning Packets and Drop-off Bins last Spring to masks, crazy drop o...

Five For Friday the Fifth!

It's been another great week at Page, but don't take my word for it. Check out just FIVE of the many amazing things going on here! 5. Donors Choose! - 5th Grade Teacher Mrs. Schneider applied for a DonorsChoose grant for a project on where the Red Fern Grows. Grateful this happened and excited to see the work this class will do! 4. WINning- Mrs. Witt has been using our Reading Street program to differentiate for and in this case extend some of her high level readers. Using the "Inquiry: Extended Concepts" part of Reading Street students researched and presented information about historic wildfires this week and their Google Slide presentations turned out great! 3. It's a Figure of Speech - For part of March is Reading Month several of our 5th grade classes had students dress up as "idioms." Pictured here are several students and Ms. Corey and Ms. Schrader. 2. Not Taking it for 'GRANT'ed - Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Meredith applied for and received a...

Here are just 5 of the incredible things that happened at Page this week... 5. You Can Measure Height.. -But you can't measure heart. Mrs. Michalski's class got a frisbee stuck in the roof gutter during recess. A few of her students and I collaborated, and decided what we lacked in height, we could make up for in heart and creative problem solving 😉I was just happy to help! 4. MAP-ping It Ou t - We mostly wrapped up our NWEA MAP testing this week. I remain in awe of the amazing job our teachers and students do each day growing through a pandemic. The initial results are impressive considering everything that has gone on the last 9-10 months! 3. Snow YAY - Sorry, but even principals get excited about the first snow day of the year! 2. Let It Rip - A few of our 4th Grade classes have started a cool series of science experiments to learn about energy in a mechanical system and a few o principles of Newtonian physics. In particular I got to see Mrs. Keizer's students as they...

Five for Friday - For This Week Here Are 5 Creative Ways the Amazing People at Page Have Kept Covid from Cancelling! 5. Kingpin -  Traditionally our PE classes have gone bowling. Well, if Mrs. Cross can't take them to the bowling alley, she'll bring the bowling alley to them. Glad to see that our students are still able to enjoy this! 4. Virtual Lansing - Mrs. Smith got creative on behalf of our 4th grade team. I had to cancel their physical field trip to Lansing this spring. She was able to work out a virtual one instead! 3. Battle of the Books - a committee met this week to discuss how to still host some form of this event in some fashion. Please stay tuned as the committee has some great ideas! 2. Off Base-- Like so many things, Covid has upended the way our 5th graders experience STARBASE. Thanks to the flexibility of our 5th grade team and the team in Battle Creek our students are attending STARBASE virtually here at Page on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I was able to drop ...

HERE ARE 5 HIGHLIGHTS FROM ANOTHER AMAZING WEEK... 5. "A Picture is Worth..." Picture day went incredibly well! Grateful for everyone's help making it go so smoothly. 4. Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls -  Just a shout out for how well you all handled the water damage from the construction leaks. Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Keizer were incredibly flexible in moving their rooms. Interventions were great about shifting their location, and the rest of the staff was incredibly accommodating. THANKFUL FOR EVERYONE'S EFFORTS! 3. SOCK It To Me - Our Student Council has launched into action. They will be running a SOCKtober sock drive. Students can bring donations into their class now through Nov. 6th. BONUS - I got to fill in for Mrs. Sikkema while she met with StuCo reps. It's always fun to jump back in the classroom. 2. Chalk it Up to Science -  Our 4th grade classes have been doing a really cool experiment with chalk. It's all about discovering how landforms and the Ea...

HERE ARE JUST 5 OF THE MANY AMAZING THINGS THAT HAPPENED HERE AT PAGE THIS WEEK! 5. When Kindness Blooms - Huge shoutout to local gem Creekside Growers. They sent Debbie and Keri a beautiful arrangement of flowers to spread kindness! 4. Math Mindset - I've been doing teacher observations and couldn't help but notice a great display of 'Growth Mindset' in classrooms. One of the best examples was in Mrs. Schrader's room. Students were incredibly comfortable talking through mistakes they made then explaining what to do differently next time.  3. In Full Swing - Shout out to our Grounds crew and our PTO. With funds from PTO our grounds crew was able to replace some equipment that was near the end of its life. So great to see everyone's effort to keep things #TKStrong 2. Conference Call - I want to take a moment to give a shout-out to everyone involved in our first ever "Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences." I know this was different and not without chall...

Five For Friday - October 9 5. Where Have All The Good Times Gone - Sorry this has little to do with Page and education. It was incredibly sad to learn on my way home from Page Tuesday that Eddie Van Halen passed away. He was nearly single handedly responsible for getting me to love hard rock as a child. 4. Spirited Students - Blown away by the spirit our students and staff showed this week. Spirit weeks are always fun especially with such a good group that had fun while keeping it classy. 3. Daring Greatly - Mrs. Sikkema and Mrs. Schneider, our Student Council advisors, had classrooms elect two StuCo representatives per class this week. Students that wanted to run gave speeches then each class voted. Really impressed by the caliber of future leaders here at Page. 2. STATE YOUR NAME - I was able to observe multiple 4th grade students from several classes using a cool app “ChatterPix” to record a voice over presentation on a US state that they researched. 1. When Push Comes t...
